The Ten Virgins and the Door That Closes

All ten had lamps. All ten were invited. All ten knew the bridegroom was coming. The difference between the five who entered and the five who did not was not knowledge. It was preparation. The wise brought extra oil. The foolish did not.

When the bridegroom arrived at midnight, the foolish ran to buy oil. By the time they returned, the door was shut.

What Jesus Did Not Say

Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not say the five foolish virgins were evil. He does not say they did not believe. He says they were not ready. And readiness required something they could not borrow or improvise at the last moment.

That is the most important detail in the story. The oil could not be shared, borrowed, or rushed. It had to be in the lamp before midnight. Once the moment arrived, the window was closed.

The Window That Closes

You cannot apply for life insurance after a terminal diagnosis. You cannot back-date coverage. You cannot borrow insurability from someone who prepared. Once a health condition changes your eligibility – once the door closes – the opportunity is gone.

The five foolish virgins did not lose their invitation because they were bad people. They lost it because they delayed. They assumed the bridegroom would arrive on their timeline. He did not.

James 4:13-14 says: “You do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” The timing is not in your control. The preparation is.

The Oil Is Available Now

The door is open right now. If you are healthy today, the ability to qualify for coverage exists today. That may not be true next month or next year. A new diagnosis, a change in health, an unexpected event – any of these can move you from the wise category to the foolish category overnight.

Proverbs 27:12 says the prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simple keep going and suffer the consequences. The Ten Virgins parable is that proverb in story form. Same truth. Same consequence. Same choice.

The question is simple: Is the oil in your lamp? If not, the merchant is still open. But the bridegroom is on his way.
