Naomi lost her husband and both sons. Ruth, her daughter-in-law, refused to leave her. They returned to Bethlehem with nothing. Ruth went to glean in the fields – the lowest rung of the economic ladder, reserved for the destitute.
Boaz noticed her. He did not wait for someone else to step in. He instructed his workers to leave extra grain for her intentionally. He invited her to eat with the workers. He warned his men not to touch her. He created conditions in which a woman with nothing could receive what she needed with dignity.
The Full Redemption
Then he went further. He discovered he was a kinsman-redeemer – legally able to purchase Naomi’s land and marry Ruth, restoring everything the family had lost. Another man had the first right. Boaz went through the proper legal process. When the other man declined, Boaz redeemed the full inheritance.
His one act of coverage produced Obed, who produced Jesse, who produced David – the king God chose for Israel. What Boaz did for one widow became the lineage of a dynasty.
What This Teaches About Coverage
A life insurance policy does what Boaz did. It stands in when the breadwinner is gone. It covers what was lost. It restores what the family built. It moves toward the uncovered rather than away from them.
Ruth had nothing after her husband died. No income. No assets. No plan. She was gleaning – surviving on what others left behind. That is the reality for many families after an unexpected death when no protection plan is in place. The surviving spouse absorbs the full financial impact of the loss with no mechanism to recover.
A policy changes that outcome completely. The mortgage stays current. The children stay in school. The family mourns without financial collapse. That is redemption in its most practical form.
Chayil – The Shared Standard
Ruth 2:1 describes Boaz as a man of chayil – strength, valor, might, and wealth. Proverbs 31:10 uses the same word for the ideal woman. God did not use a different standard. The same Hebrew word. The same expectation. Strength expressed through action. Protection expressed through preparation.
Every person who places a protection plan for their family is acting in the spirit of Boaz. They are seeing the uncovered, moving toward them, and creating conditions where the family is protected before the crisis arrives. That single act – like Boaz’s – can produce generational results that outlast the person who made the decision.
