The Quiet Number · Detailed estimate

Estimate the resources needed if a household income or caregiving contribution ended. This is an educational funding scenario, not an amount to buy.

Year 0 means today. All other years are measured from today. Model a death that many years from today, at a year boundary. The first recurring payment is one year later; subsequent payments are annual. The support horizon ends in the year entered. Compare a later death year to see whether existing coverage would still apply.

Enter annual spending and dependable survivor income after tax in today’s dollars. The same inflation assumption applies to spending, caregiving, survivor income, education, and final expenses. Debt, assets, and coverage use the fixed dollar amounts entered. Do not include a policy’s cash value in assets if you also count its death benefit.

Assumptions and limitations

Present values are measured at the modeled death year. Annual cash flows occur at year end. Rates are constant assumptions, not promises. The discount rate is a nominal return after any assumed tax and cost effects; the tool does not calculate taxes or fees. No probabilities of death or underwriting are modeled.

Coverage is deducted only if marked verified and the modeled death year is on or after its start and before its expiration. Once a death benefit is payable in this scenario, later policy expiration does not remove those proceeds. Actual claims and timing depend on the contract. Only combine benefits that share the same status and coverage dates; model different terms separately. This scenario uses one asset availability date. Do not cancel coverage based on this tool.
